How many Facebook Groups are you a member of?
I bet you’re a member of a few! But:
How much time do you spend networking in those groups, making connections with peers and potential new customers?
There’s an art to effective networking within Facebook Groups, and I’m going to share with you my top tips for how to get it right:
1. Focus on a few
While you can join (and post in) hundreds of groups if you want to, you’re going to get the best results if you spend your time in a few, carefully targeted groups.
You can find Groups by searching using keywords, or by checking out the Groups Facebook has recommended for you.
To do this, go to the Groups menu on the left of your Facebook newsfeed, and click More.
A new page will open with a menu at the top, allowing you to see Groups your Friends are members of as well as Suggested Groups based on your interests.
2. Join high-quality Groups
When you join a new Group, make sure it’s a good fit for you by checking these things:
- Carefully targeted audience (look at the Group name and About description)
- Present moderators, who lead discussions and remove spam
- Quality conversations, which are relevant and not exclusively self-promotional
- Active community with regular posts and discussions
It can be hard to tell if a Group is good quality from the outside, especially if it’s a Closed Group. When you join a new Group it’s always worth taking a few moments to scroll down the recent posts for a couple of weeks to see what’s being posted and whether conversations are happening.
If all you can see is self-promotional posts with no discussions, you’ll know the Group isn;t active and won’t be a productive place for you to spend your time.
3. Be of service
Once you’ve identified and joined some relevant Groups, take some time to introduce yourself and join in with discussions.
To network effectively, you’ll need to be a regular presence in the Group and your posts should add value for other members. Just as you would do on your Page, post helpful and valuable comments or content that’s not solely promotional in nature. Offer helpful feedback and support to other members and allow others to get to know you. Offer to connect with others once you get to know them, or let people know how they can connect with you on your Page or website etc.
Remember – the key to your success is to take action – what are you waiting for? Take action now.
